Did you receive an email or a notification telling you that your Fitbit connection to WeWard is changing?
Don't worry — your steps and your Wards are safe. We'll explain everything. 🙂
What's changing?
Google (Fitbit's owner) is shutting down the connection WeWard uses to read your Fitbit steps. As of October 1st, it will stop working.
The good news: there's a better way to connect your Fitbit to WeWard — through Apple Health — and it takes about 2 minutes to set up.
What do I need to do?
Two quick steps — and any order works.
Before you start, make sure your Google Health app (your Fitbit app's new name) is up to date.
Step 1 — In WeWard
- Open WeWard and go to Settings → Steps data source
- Select Apple Health
Step 2 — In the Google Health app
- Open the Google Health app
- Tap your profile picture → Apps and services → Add connection
- Select Apple Health, tap Get started, and follow the steps
That's it! Your Fitbit steps now reach WeWard through Apple Health.

💡 Tips to maximize your step count
- Fitbit/Google Health steps sync in the background, so WeWard may not always display the most up-to-date value. If you notice discrepancies, open the Google Health app before launching WeWard.
- Set Google Health as the top priority source in Apple Health: open Apple Health → select Steps → scroll to the bottom → Data Sources & Access → tap Edit at the top → move Google Health to the top of the list.
- Make sure Google Health can sync steps in the background: on your iPhone, go to Settings → Apps → Google Health → check that Background App Refresh is enabled.
Common questions
I don't always carry my phone. Will I lose the steps my Fitbit counts?
No. Your Fitbit keeps counting steps on your wrist, with or without your phone nearby. Those steps transfer to your phone the next time your watch syncs with the Google Health app — and from there into Apple Health and WeWard. You don't need to carry your phone while you walk; just open the Google Health app from time to time so your watch can sync.
Apple Health (or WeWard) shows fewer steps than my Fitbit. Where are my steps?
Your steps travel in three hops: Fitbit device → Google Health app → Apple Health → WeWard. During the day, the last hops can lag behind your watch, so a live comparison will often show fewer steps. Your steps are not lost — they arrive with the next sync. The fixes in the section above speed things up.
Google Health? Apple Health? Which app is which?
Google Health is simply the new name of your Fitbit app — same app, new name and icon. Apple Health is Apple's own health app, pre-installed on your iPhone. Your Fitbit syncs to Google Health, Google Health shares your steps with Apple Health, and WeWard reads Apple Health.
I can't move Google Health to the top of the list in Apple Health
Open Apple Health → Browse → Activity → Steps → scroll to the bottom → Data Sources & Access → tap Edit (top right) → press and hold the three-line handle next to Google Health and drag it to the top → tap Done. If Google Health doesn't appear in the list yet, it hasn't delivered steps to Apple Health yet — open Google Health once, wait a minute, and try again.
I have an Android phone. What should I do?
Nothing yet — these instructions are for iPhone only. Android works differently, and we'll send you separate instructions before anything changes on your side. Your Fitbit connection keeps working in the meantime.
Can I keep the old Fitbit connection, or use another method?
The current direct Fitbit connection is being switched off by Google on October 1 — it will stop working for everyone, so switching back to it only postpones the problem. Connecting through Apple Health is the way to keep earning Wards with your Fitbit steps. If you prefer not to use the Google Health sync, WeWard can count the steps your iPhone records instead — but steps counted only by your watch won't be included.
