Have you noticed that under Settings → Step data source, there is now only one source called “Pedometer” displayed, without the option to choose Health Connect, Google Fit, or another source?
This is normal, and most importantly: your steps continue to be counted just like before. We’ll explain everything. 🙂
You are participating in the test of our new Pedometer
You are part of a small group of selected users invited to try WeWard’s new pedometer on Android ahead of its general release.
This is neither a bug nor a mistake on your part: your account has been automatically switched, and the app confirms this on the “Step data source” page:
“You have switched to WeWard’s newest and most reliable pedometer.”
How does the new Pedometer work?
The new pedometer combines the old sources into one.
Specifically, it reads your steps:
- from Health Connect (Android’s tool that centralizes data from your health apps: Google Fit, Samsung Health, Fitbit, etc.);
- and from the built-in step counter on your phone (Google’s activity recording API).
It then automatically selects the most reliable source available on your device.
- If you were already using Health Connect: the new Pedometer reads exactly the same data. Your step count is therefore identical to what you had before.
- If you were using Google Fit: simply connect Google Fit to Health Connect (see below). The Pedometer will then retrieve the same steps as before, including those from smartwatches and fitness bands.
Why can’t I choose my old source anymore?
For test participants, there is now only one pedometer.
The old options (Health Connect, Google Fit, Fitness Data, etc.) no longer appear in the settings: they are now managed automatically by the new Pedometer.
So it is useless to try to revert to the old system:
- ✗ Logging out and logging back in will not make the old sources reappear.
- ✗ Clearing the cache or reinstalling the app won’t either.
- ✓ The only thing to check is your Health Connect configuration (see below).
My steps seem lower than before: what should I check?
If your step count seems lower than before, it’s almost always because no app is sending steps to Health Connect.
In this case, the Pedometer falls back on the phone’s sensor, which may count differently. Here’s how to check:
- Open Health Connect: open the Health Connect app or, depending on your phone, Android Settings → Health Connect (sometimes under “Security and Privacy”).
- Under “Your health apps” / “App permissions”, verify that WeWard appears and is authorized to read steps.
- Check that at least one source app is connected to Health Connect and authorized to write steps: Google Fit, Samsung Health, Fitbit, your smartwatch app, etc. If none appear, follow the steps in the next section.
- Walk for a few minutes, then reopen WeWard: your steps should update.
How do I connect a step source to Health Connect?
The connection is done from the source app (the one that counts your steps), not from Health Connect. Once synchronization is enabled, it will automatically appear in Health Connect.
- Open the app you want to use as your step source:
- Google Fit: tap your profile picture → Fit Settings → Sync Fit with Health Connect and enable the option.
- Samsung Health: tap ⋮ (Menu) → Settings → Health Connect and allow data sharing.
- Fitbit: tab Today → your profile picture → Fitbit Settings → Health Connect and enable synchronization.
- Other app or smartwatch: look for “Health Connect” in the app’s settings, or check the app developer’s help resources.
- When the app asks, allow sharing of “Steps” (you can allow everything if you wish).
- Go back to Health Connect → App permissions: your app should now appear in the list, authorized to write steps – and WeWard must be authorized to read them.
- To verify everything works: in Health Connect, open Data & access → Steps. Your recent steps should display there, and WeWard will show the same count.
Still having an issue?
If after these checks your step count still seems incorrect, contact us through the app.
We are closely monitoring this test and every feedback helps us improve the new Pedometer before its rollout to everyone.
Thank you for being part of it! 💛
